Affiliate programs exist as a way for web site owners to join forces with online companies that offer products and services to their visitors.

Depending on the type of program that you join, you will insert some code (provide by the program) on your website with the goal of driving clicks to the affiliate programs site.  Normally a cookie or tracking code will record this click from your website.  If the surfer ultimately buys something from the retailer, then you will get a commission on the sale.  There are also programs that pay per click.

 The website owner normally handles filling and processing the orders, handles shipment and collections and then provides a commission to the referring website owner.
