A portable air type unit is a small mobile air conditioner unlike a window air conditioner which is mounted inside of a window or through-the-wall.  These unit use a flexible house which connects to an adapter plate that goes in your window.

Portable air conditioners do not require permanent installation.  Many unit have wheels which allow the portable air units to be moved from room to room.

Portable air conditioners also work great in apartment situations where a window unit is unacceptable.
